8 Myths and Facts about Sagging Breasts

Halle Berry told InStyle, “If you don’t want your boobs to hit your knees by the time you’re 30, always wear a bra, even to bed.”

Berry credits continuously wearing a bra as the reason she has such a perky pair; however, she might be misinformed. How much do you know about what causes (and does not cause) your breasts to sag?

1. Exercises keep your breasts from drooping

False

Breasts consist of fat and glandular tissue, not muscle, which means there is nothing for you to tighten and tone. That said, chest exercises would strengthen the ligaments surrounding your pectoral area. When an individual tones the Cooper’s ligaments the breasts do tend to look livelier.

2. As you age, your breasts begin to sag
True

Just like all the tissues in the body, breasts consist of elastin and collagen, both of which break down as we age. During menopause, fat replaces the breasts’ dense grandular tissue. This fat lacks the ability to support the breast, which makes it more likely to cause the breasts to sag.

3. Sun tanning, diet and smoking can cause your breasts to droop

True

Although we have an abundance of sunshine here in South Africa, keep in mind that ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure does affect the look of your breasts. Additionally, eating a high fat diet that lacks the proper nutrients, as well as smoking can contribute to sagging breasts. According to a 2008 study that is published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, these lifestyle choices are detrimental because they breakdown your skin’s collagen.

4. Breastfeeding causes breasts to sag

False

According to the same 2008 study, breastfeeding does not cause the breasts to sag.

5. Pregnancy can cause drooping breasts

True

Weight gain throughout a pregnancy can cause the ligaments supporting the breasts to stretch. This can lead to sagging. This sagging occurs because the connective tissue, (Cooper’s ligaments) that keeps your breasts perky begins to stretch. Although a woman cannot completely avoid drooping breasts, she can minimize these negative effects by sticking to a healthy weight gain during her pregnancy.

6. Wearing a bra prevents sagging breasts

False

Although a bra holds the breasts up, giving you the shape and look you desire, it cannot prevent the inevitable drooping. This sagging occurs naturally throughout the aging process. The constant pull of gravity on the breasts is what causes them to droop. Unfortunately, there is very little that you; yourself, can do to prevent your breasts from drooping.

7. It is not necessary to wear a sports bra for support during high impact activity

False

This is something that you can do to reduce the stress placed on your breasts during your workout routine. According to one French researcher, wearing a typical bra actually encourages the breasts to sag. The study found that the bra weakens the tissues that support your breasts; however, a supportive sports bra may be the exception. High impact exercises cause the breasts to bounce, which will eventually cause damage to the connective tissues in your breasts. For this reason, Dr. Tal Roudner recommends that you wear a sports bra while performing all high impact activities (aerobics and running, etc.).

8. Plastic surgery procedures can help with sagging breasts

True

There are plastic surgery procedures specifically designed to address various issues related to the breasts.
